Slipping gears
The engine revs rise but the car doesn't accelerate to match, or it drops out of gear. This often points to low fluid or internal wear.
Transmission service Auckland
Your automatic gearbox gives you warning signs before it fails. Here's what to look for, what a transmission service involves, and when fluid isn't the answer.
An automatic transmission is one of the most expensive parts of your car to repair, and one of the easiest to neglect, because it just works until it doesn't. The good news is that a struggling gearbox usually tells you first: a slip, a delay, a shudder, a noise, a smell or a warning light.
This guide covers the warning signs worth acting on, what a transmission service actually involves, and how to tell when a fluid change will help and when you need a proper diagnosis. We're Tui Torque Motors Ltd, trading as Car Master Automotive, and we carry out transmission oil changes and gearbox checks at our Wiri workshop.
Quick answer
Slipping gears, delayed or harsh shifts, shuddering, whining noises, a burning smell, leaking fluid and a transmission warning light are the signs not to ignore. Some are a fluid or servicing issue; others point to internal wear, so get it diagnosed before changing anything. The right service interval depends on your gearbox and your manufacturer, and a fluid change won't repair existing mechanical damage.
What it is
A transmission service replaces or refreshes the gearbox fluid and checks the transmission for problems. Depending on the design, it can also include a new filter or pan gasket, an inspection for leaks, a scan for transmission fault codes and a road test. The details vary a lot, and a method that suits one gearbox may not suit another, so the correct procedure and fluid always come from the manufacturer's requirements and the gearbox's condition.
Not all automatics are the same. Common types include conventional torque-converter automatics, continuously variable transmissions (CVT), dual-clutch transmissions such as DSG, and the eCVT-style systems in many hybrids. Each uses a specific fluid, and using the wrong one can cause damage.
The warning signs
The engine revs rise but the car doesn't accelerate to match, or it drops out of gear. This often points to low fluid or internal wear.
A noticeable pause before the car moves after you select Drive or Reverse.
Bangs, thumps or lurches between gears, or shifts that feel inconsistent.
A judder or vibration at certain speeds or during gear changes, sometimes mistaken for an engine misfire.
New noises that change with speed or gear. See also our guide to car shaking while driving.
Overheated or degraded fluid smells burnt and looks dark, rather than clean and reddish.
Red or brown fluid under the car. Low fluid quickly turns a small problem into a big one.
A transmission or check-engine light, or the car staying in one gear to protect itself. Don't keep driving on it.
Causes
Fluid or repair?
A fluid service is preventive maintenance. It helps most when it's done on schedule, before wear and heat have degraded the fluid, and it can improve mild shift quality complaints caused by tired fluid.
What it can't do is repair damage that's already there. If a gearbox is slipping because the clutches are worn, new fluid won't fix it, and some vehicles need a specific procedure, fluid, temperature or diagnostic check first. That's why we diagnose before we recommend. A diagnostic scan ($60 +GST) reads the stored fault codes across all available modules, including the transmission.
How often?
There's no single answer. The interval depends on your gearbox type, manufacturer, mileage and how the car is used. Towing, heavy loads, hot weather, hills and stop-start traffic all make the fluid work harder. Your owner's manual is the starting point.
Some manufacturers describe the fluid as "lifetime". That generally means there's no scheduled change in the manufacturer's service plan, not that the fluid never wears out, so it's worth having the fluid condition checked, especially on higher-mileage, older or hard-working vehicles. If you're not sure of the history, ask us to look at it. See also our guide to preventive maintenance.
What to do
In Wiri
We carry out transmission oil changes in Wiri using the fluid your manufacturer specifies, and we check the gearbox for leaks and fault codes first. That includes European gearboxes such as DSG, covered on our European car specialist page. Because the right job depends on the vehicle and the fluid, we confirm the details and quote before any work starts.
Call or text 022 095 0555 with your number plate and we'll tell you what we recommend for your car. We're at Unit 2, 69 Wiri Station Road, open Monday to Friday 9am–5pm and Saturday 9am–12pm.
Common questions
It depends on your gearbox type, manufacturer and how you use the car. Your owner's manual is the starting point, and towing, heavy loads, heat and stop-start driving make the fluid work harder. If you're unsure of the history, have the fluid condition checked.
Not necessarily. Slipping can come from low fluid, but also from worn clutches, hydraulic problems or electrical faults. Fluid replacement alone may not fix internal wear, so diagnosis comes first.
It depends on the gearbox and its condition. Not every transmission suits a flush, and some need a specific procedure. The right method comes from the manufacturer's requirements and an assessment of your car.
It depends on the vehicle, the type and amount of fluid, and what the gearbox needs. Call or text 022 095 0555 with your number plate for a quote. We confirm the details before starting.
New automatic transmission fluid is typically reddish or pinkish, though this varies by type. Dark brown or black fluid, or a burnt smell, suggests it has degraded or overheated and the gearbox should be checked.
A transmission warning light means something needs attention, and driving on can cause more damage. If the car is in limp mode, smells of burning or the light is flashing, stop driving and get it checked.
Many hybrids use a specialised transmission with its own fluid and service requirements set by the manufacturer. Ask us to check your vehicle's requirements. For the hybrid battery, see our guide to hybrid battery problems.
