Ford Ranger and Ute Servicing: What Should a Major Service Include?
"Major service" means different things at different workshops. Here's what a diesel ute should actually get, and how to compare quotes properly.
If you're looking for a Ford Ranger service in Auckland, you'll soon notice that "major service" isn't a fixed thing. One workshop's major service is another's basic oil change with an inspection. For a diesel ute that tows, carries tools and works hard, the difference matters.
This guide sets out what a major service should cover on a Ranger or similar ute, how it compares with our Basic and Premium services, and how to compare quotes. We're Tui Torque Motors Ltd, trading as Car Master Automotive, in Wiri, and we service all makes and models. For the common Ranger faults themselves, see our Ford Ranger service & maintenance guide.
Quick answer
There's no official definition of a "major service", so ask for the itemised list. For a diesel ute like the Ranger it should cover the engine oil and filter to Ford's specification, fuel, air and cabin filters as scheduled, brake and tyre checks, the cooling system, suspension and steering, differential and transfer case oil where due, DPF and AdBlue checks, and a fault-code scan. Our ute services start at $349 (Basic) and $399 (Premium) +GST for up to 9 L of engine oil.
The term
What is a "major service", really?
There's no industry-standard definition. Some workshops use "minor" for an oil and filter change and "major" for anything bigger. Manufacturers instead set interval services in the owner's manual, each with its own list of tasks.
That's why the useful question isn't "how much is your major service?" but "what exactly is in it?". Ask for an itemised list and compare like for like.
The checklist
What a major service on a Ranger or diesel ute should include
| Item | Why it matters on a ute |
|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | Diesels run hot and carry soot in the oil, and utes take a lot of it. It needs the correct specification for the engine. |
| Fuel filter | Protects the injectors on a modern diesel. Replaced as the manufacturer's schedule requires. |
| Air and cabin filters | Dusty worksites, gravel roads and farm tracks clog filters faster. |
| Brakes: pads, discs and fluid | Loads and towing mean more weight to stop, so brakes work harder and wear faster. |
| Coolant and hoses | Towing and hot weather put the cooling system under stress. |
| Differential and transfer case oil (4x4) | Heavily loaded or off-road utes work these components hard. Done where the schedule calls for it. |
| Automatic transmission fluid | Towing and heavy loads shorten fluid life. Checked, and changed as the schedule requires. |
| DPF, AdBlue and EGR checks | Short trips and low-speed driving can load the DPF and EGR. Faults here trigger warning lights. |
| Suspension, steering and driveline | Bushes, shocks, leaf springs, joints and driveshafts wear faster under load. |
| Tyres and alignment | Load and larger tyres change wear patterns; poor alignment wears tyres out fast. |
| Battery and charging | Starting loads are high on a diesel, and extra electrics add to the demand. |
| Towbar, hitch and trailer lights | Checked if you tow, so you know the connection is safe and legal. |
| Fault-code scan and road test | Reads stored codes across all modules and confirms nothing is hiding. |
Not every item is due at every service. The intervals come from the manufacturer's schedule and how the ute is used, which is why a proper service starts with an inspection, not a fixed list.
Our approach
How this compares with our Basic and Premium ute services
Our ute services are set package prices based on how much engine oil your vehicle takes: Basic $349 and Premium $399 +GST for up to 9 L of oil. Extra oil beyond the package amount is charged on top. Give us your rego and we'll confirm the right package.
- Basic: engine oil and filter replacement, coolant level check and top-up, washer top-up, a basic vehicle inspection, and an engine air filter and cabin filter inspection
- Premium adds a comprehensive vehicle inspection, tyre condition, pressure and wear checks, brake pad inspection, brake fluid top-up, a battery health check and an underbody inspection
Anything else your schedule calls for, such as a fuel filter, differential, transfer case or transmission fluid, or a DPF clean, is assessed and quoted before we do it, so you only pay for what your ute needs. Every job is logged to a digital service record. See the full service prices and what's in each package on our car servicing page.
Why utes are different
Why a ute needs more than a car service
- Towing and loads put more heat and stress on the engine, brakes, gearbox, differentials and tyres
- Short trips and low speeds stop the DPF reaching the temperature it needs to clear itself
- Dusty and rough conditions clog filters and wear suspension, bushes and driveline parts
- Diesel emissions systems (DPF, AdBlue, EGR) need specific diagnostic tools when they fault
We cover those faults in more detail in our Ford Ranger guide, and our ECU tuning & emissions diagnostics page covers DPF and AdBlue work.
Compare quotes
How to compare ute service quotes
- How many litres of engine oil are included, and what's charged if your ute takes more?
- Which oil specification and filter are used?
- Is a fuel filter included, or only if it's due?
- Are differential, transfer case and transmission fluid checked, and when are they changed?
- How detailed is the inspection, and do you get a written report?
- Is the price with or without GST? Ours exclude GST
- Do you get a digital service record afterwards?
A cheap "major service" that leaves out the fuel filter, the diff oil and the inspection isn't the same job as a more complete one.
How often
How often should a Ranger or ute be serviced?
Follow the interval in your owner's manual, which sets it by time or distance, whichever comes first. If your ute tows, carries heavy loads, works on dusty sites or does mostly short trips, ask whether your use calls for more frequent checks. For businesses running several utes and vans, our fleet maintenance keeps servicing scheduled, with one invoice.
The same approach applies to other popular diesel utes, including the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton, Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50, and we service all makes and models.

How much does a Ford Ranger service cost in Auckland?
Our ute services are set package prices based on engine oil capacity: a Basic Service is $349 +GST and a Premium Service is $399 +GST for up to 9 L of oil, with extra oil charged on top. Items beyond the package, such as fuel filter, differential or transmission fluid, are assessed and quoted first.

Does a service include a DPF clean?
No. A DPF clean or forced regeneration is a separate job when diagnosis shows it is needed. A service includes checking for related fault codes and warnings.
What oil does a Ford Ranger take?
The oil specification and amount depend on the engine and model year. Give us your number plate and we'll confirm the correct oil and the right service package before we start.
Can I service my Ranger at an independent workshop and keep the warranty?
Often yes, provided the servicing follows the manufacturer's schedule and specifications and is documented. Check your warranty terms, and ask us how we record the work. Every job is logged to a digital service record.
Do you service work fleets of utes and vans?
Yes. We offer scheduled fleet maintenance with priority booking and consolidated invoicing for Auckland businesses. Ask about fleet rates on 022 095 0555.
